The Great Sand Dunes National Park
Just 40 miles north of San Luis is the Great Sand Dunes National Park, a wonderful place to spend the day to picnic, climb the dunes or wade along in the shallow river, connecting with nature at it's grandest.
Zapata Falls
On the way to the Great Sand Dunes is Zapata Falls, a 40' tall waterfall located inside a steep rock crevasse near the base of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. This spectacular waterfall is accessible via an easy half mile hiking trail. Hike requires, good sturdy shoes, and in order to view the falls, you will definitely get your feet wet. The views of the valley and the Sand Dunes are fantastic, and there are four miles of well-marked hiking trails below the parking area.
Rio Grande Scenic Railroad
Climb aboard for the journey of a lifetime, relive the golden age of railroads and discover a Colorado few get to see. For a unique and exciting change of pace, you can take a day trip from Fort Garland to La Veta! The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad is a great way to experience the history and beauty of this majestic region.
A Taste of the Wild West—The Fort at Fort Garland
Infamous Indian fighter Kit Carson once served as Commander of Fort Garland. Just 15 miles north of San Luis, on the way to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, the fort was established in 1858 to protect the Spanish settlers from Indians. The fort was also occupied for a time by the famous African-American Buffalo Soldiers during the years 1876 to 1879. In 1883 after 25 years of service the fort was abandoned by the U.S. military.
White Mountain Trading Post—Another Taste of the Wild West
Just a few feet across the road from the Fort is yet another attraction that will give you a sense of life in the wild west. You'll find an amazing collection of authentic jewelry and memorabilia in the trading post, beautiful mustangs to ride within a beautiful corral (or maybe just watch), authentic Navajo buildings, and Ole Joe will be there to greet you.
